Rio5 in out of the World Cup shock ... but all is not lost

The silver lining on this seemingly large cloud is of course that with Rio out injured, the armband will pass to Gerrard, a proven inspirational leader. The Liverpool captaincy has only brought the best out of Stevie G.

People often comment on Gerrard's disappointing performances in international tournaments, having never really done anything. However, in Euro 2004, Stevie was completely distracted by a potential move to Chelsea. Which of us wouldn't be distracted by having such a difficult decision to make, one that would involve moving house, a new job etc. Difficult stuff.

It seemed a bit strange to read that apparently Gerrard was still
blaming transfer talk linking him to Chelsea two years later, despite the fact that by 2006, Chelsea had (a) signed Michael Essien to play on the right of the midfield three when Gerrard didn't join them in 2005 (b) just signed genuinely world class midfielder Michael Ballack (ahem) and (c) did not make any attempt to sign Gerrard at all in 2006, having had their time wasted for the previous two summers.

Still, fortunately for England, Captain Gerrard will be completely distraction free this summer, and ready to focus on the World Cup.

Unless they give the armband back to JT, of course ...

Big Em has worn the armband before, so it wouldn't be much of a gamble. To be fair though, so has Phil Neville.
